Police suspect gang-related activity

Altus Police are investigating what they believe to be a gang-related shooting over the weekend. According to Altus Police Chief Tim Murphy, a 16-year-old male was the victim of multiple gun shots at the incident that happened around 11 p.m. on Sunday night.

Police were called to the 800 block of N. Lee on Sunday night where the incident was said to have happened. Murphy said that little information about the shooting was being provided. Murphy said that he victim told investigators that he and another teenager were riding in the bed of a pick up truck when a dark colored car pulled up next to them.

“Gun shots were fired after the victim and a witness jumped from the pick up and began to run,” said Murphy. “The victim was shot multiple times, but the other male juvenile involved was not injured.”

The victim was transported to Jackson County Memorial Hospital by EMS personnel. He was later flown to an Oklahoma City hospital. His condition is not currently known.

Murphy said that the suspect is described as a black male in his late teens. The victim and witnesses also told police that a white female, 20 to 30 years of age, was a passenger in the suspect vehicle. Police continue their investigation into this shooting.
