Multi-injury accident on Saturday


Five passengers ejected from vehicle

A multi-injury accident happened Saturday, Sept. 12 at about 4:45 p.m. on US Highway 62, .5 north and .5 east of Headrick. According to reports, a 1999 Lincoln Navigator, driven by Erika Martinez, 25, of Altus, for an unknown reason, departed the left side of roadway, crossed center the median and westbound lanes and rolled, ejecting five passengers.

Martinez was transported by Air Evac to OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City where she was admitted in stable condition with head and trunk internal injuries. Passenger one, Joseph Ponder, 29, of Altus, was transported by Kiowa County EMS to Comanche County Memorial Hospital in Lawton where he was treated and released. Passenger two, Frank Cerda IV, 20, of Altus, was transported by Air Evac to OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City where he was admitted in stable condition with head and trunk internal injuries. Passenger three, Charles Colbert, 44 of Altus, was transported by Jackson County EMS to Jackson County Memorial Hospital in Altus where he was treated and released. Passenger four, Aspin Alexander, 27, of Altus, was transported by Jackson County EMS to Jackson County Memorial Hospital in Altus where she was treated and released. A three-year-old passenger of Altus, was transported by Kiowa County EMS to Comanche County Memorial Hospital in Lawton where they were treated and released. A seven-year-old passenger of Altus was transported by Kiowa County EMS to Comanche County Memorial Hospital in Lawton where they were treated and released. A two-year-old passenger of Altus was also transported by Air Evac to OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City where they were admitted in stable condition with head and trunk internal injuries.

There were no other vehicles involved. Passengers 1, 2, 5, 6, and 7 were all ejected from the vehicle. The condition of driver and cause of the collision is under investigation. Seatbelts were equipped and in use by driver and passenger 1, 3, and 4 Airbags were equipped but did not deploy.

The Accident was investigated by Trooper Alex Wilson #265 of the Kiowa County Detachment of Troop M. Assisted by Lt. Steve Pothorst #172, Trooper Jimmy Wallace #734 of the Jackson County Detachment of Troop M, Trooper Shane Newell #480 of the Greer County Detachment of Troop M, Trooper Chris Sherman #661, of the Jackson County Detachment of Troop M, Trooper Shawn Laughlin #324 of the Greer County Detachment of Troop M, Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, Jackson County EMS, Kiowa County EMS, Air Evac, Headrick Fire Department, and Altus Fire Department.
