Program on Salvation Army to be given at ‘Men of Faith in Action’ breakfast

“Men of Faith in Action” will meet at the First United Methodist Church on Saturday, Sept. 12. A hardy breakfast will be served at 7:30 a.m., followed by a presentation about the Salvation Army from Ben and Rhon Walters.

The local Salvation Army is currently being led by Ben Walters, Jr. and his wife Rhon. Ben is also the son of Salvation Army officers. He was born in Georgia, but spent time growing up also in North Carolina, Texas, and Virginia. In 1989, he graduated from Harrisonburg High School in Virginia.

In 1992, Ben moved to Oklahoma City. This is where he met and began dating Rhonda “Rhon” Biggs. It was love at first sight.

Ben and Rhon married on July 31, 1993 at The Salvation Army chapel in Shawnee. He completed school at DeMarge College (Oklahoma City) in 1996 with a Professional Computerized Accounting diploma. In September of 1996, Ben and Rhon accepted job offers at The Salvation Army in Fort Smith, Ark. Ben became the Administrative Assistant, with Bookkeeping and Human Resource responsibilities; and Rhon became the Christian Education Director.

During their time in Fort Smith, Ben and Rhon realized the call to full-time ministry within The Salvation Army. In 1998, they were accepted into the “Forward 2000” Session of The Salvation Army’s Southern Territory Evangeline Booth College in Atlanta, Ga. They were ordained (including a Standard Teacher Diploma from the Evangelical Training Association) and commissioned to be Assistant Corps Officers in Columbia, S.C. in June of 2000.

Since that time, they have served as Corps Officers in Statesville, N.C.; Baltimore (Middle River), Md.; Conway, Ark.; Muskogee; Sand Springs; and now Altus. They have been responsible for The Salvation Army’s diverse ministry, including evangelical church programming & outreach; social services programs; Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club programs; Emergency and Transitional Shelter programs; Adult Rehabilitation programs (assistant role); and Thrift Store operations.

In March of 2011, Ben graduated from Arrow Leadership in Vancouver, British Columbia. Arrow was founded in 1991 by Dr. Leighton Ford. Personally mentored by Billy Graham, Dr. Ford was an associate evangelist and vice president with the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association. Today, with over 1400 alumni, Arrow is training leaders in twenty countries of the world, and has graduates leading major ministry organizations worldwide.

Ben enjoys the outdoors, sports, God’s artistic creations, God’s Word, and people.

Ben and Rhon have four children, Bailey Nicole (20), Ben, III (19), Raegan Leigh (17), and Rorie Laine (14). They are currently the Corps Officers of the Altus Salvation Army and hold the rank of Major.
