The Jackson County Fair will be held next week, Sept. 9-12, so you better start getting your entries ready. Along with all of the animal events, fun competitions for the kids, booths and other activities, the pubic is invited to enter their best canned foods, arts & crafts, paintings, hand stitched items, garden bounty, photography and more. The top three winners in each category will receive ribbons, and the top winners will also receive cash prizes. For a complete list of categories and rules, look to the Fair Section. Events for this year fair are, on Wednesday, Sept. 9: Entry of Open Class, 4-H and FFA non-livestock exhibits at the Expo Center, with judging of exhibits at 6:15 p.m.
Commercial Exhibit Set-Up will be on Thursday, with the fair opening to the general public at 4 p.m.
Enter of Poultry, Rabbits and Guinea Pigs will be from 3 to 5 p.m., Judging of commercial booths will be at 4 p.m., Judging of Poultry, Rabbits and Guinea Pigs (showmanship rabbits only) at 5:30 p.m., Open Junior & Senior Youth Farm Hand Olympics will be held at 7 p.m. The Expo Center closes at 9 p.m.
Friday is Kids Day at the fair. The fair opens at 8:30 a.m. with children’s tours and games from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Kevin Law’s Border Collie Demonstrations will be at 9 a.m., as well as the OSU Insect display. Crops judging will be at 4 p.m., with Turtle Races at 5:30 p.m. Check in of Sheep and Swine will be from 3 to 5 p.m. with the Sheep Show being held from 6 to 7 p.m. A Turkey Calling Contest will be held at 6:30 p.m., and the Swine Show will be held at 7:30 p.m. The 7th annual Wiener Dog Race will also be held at 7:30 p.m. The Expo Center closes at 9 p.m.
The Fair opens to the public at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, with a Tractor Pedal Pull Contest at 9:30 a.m., a Border Collie Demonstration at 9:30 a.m., and the Beautiful Baby Contest at 10 a.m. Checking in of Beef and Goats will be from noon to 2 p.m., with a small animal Pet Parade being held from noon to 1 p.m. SWTC and Jackson County 4-H Robotics will have a demonstration at the fair from 1 to 2 p.m., with Karaoke from 2 to 4 p.m. The Altus Air Force Base Security Dog Demonstration will be from 3 to 4 p.m., with the Goat Show at 4 p.m. Turtle Races will be held at 5 p.m., and the Beef Show will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Exhibits will be released at 6 p.m., with the fair coming to a close at 9 p.m. The Expo Center will be locked at 10 p.m., so be sure and pick up your entries by then.
There will also be a carnival at this year’s Jackson County Fair, as well as a Sheriff Department Display, an appearance by Air Evac on Childrens Day, a petting zoo, special appearances by Miss Altus and Miss Altus Outstanding Teen, and more.
