Farm City Week fast approaching

Farm City Week 2015 is just a month away, and the excitement is brewing as the planning committee held their final meeting Wednesday, Sept. 2. As reported last month, Farm City Week will take place the week immediately following the downtown Altus Chili Cook-Off. The Chili Cook-off will be on Saturday, Oct. 3 and it’s said that there will likely be an outdoor concert and street dance that night. Farm City Week will run Oct. 5-7, with an array of activities planned.

The purpose of Farm City Week is to highlight the importance of agriculture to the Southwest Oklahoma economy, and allow an opportunity for the community to celebrate the accomplishments of Altus’ local producers. This is also another occasion the community and Air Force Base to come together and emphasize the relationship and dependence on each other.

Monday, October 5

Farm tours will kick off Farm City Week on Monday, the first tour beginning at 8 a.m., and the second tour at 1:30 p.m. The luncheon is back, and will be held at noon at the Jackson County Expo Center.

Tuesday, October 6

A new feature for Farm City Week is the Dam Tour that will take place on Tuesday. This tour will focus on the irrigated agriculture infrastructure in Southwest Oklahoma. The banquet will take place Tuesday evening at 6 p.m., featuring great food, entertainment, awards and more. Awards presented during the banquet will honor a young producer with the Farm City Generations Award, and a more seasoned producer with the Farm City Legends Award. Nomination forms have been sent out with a Sept. 18 deadline.

Wednesday, October 7

Farm City Week’s events will conclude with area producers and business people taking a flight at Altus Air Force Base. Space is limited.

Mark your calendars and plan to attend the Farm City Week events and activities.
