The Jackson County Homeless Prevention Alliance meeting will be held Friday, Aug. 28, at 12 p.m., at Altus City Hall. This meeting will be dedicated to the planning of the “Point in Time Count” to be held on Saturday, Sept. 12.

A “Point in time Count”, also referred to as a PIT, is a count of sheltered and unsheltered homeless persons on a given day or night. The U.S Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) requires that the Continuums of Care (around the world) conduct an annual PIT in January. The Southwest Oklahoma Continuum of Care, based in Lawton, has taken the initiative to hold the PIT twice a year.

“Jackson County has never had an official count for the people experiencing homelessness and it’s important as a community to have that accurate data so we can continue to move towards a solution,” said Amanda Bernasconi, Founder and Chair of the Homeless Prevention Alliance.

Obtaining an accurate count of those individuals, veterans and families that are experiencing homeless situations allows the Continuum of Care to justify funding needs to provide more resources to serve and assist.

Homeless living conditions include:

Unsheltered; on the streets or sleeping somewhere that is not meant for habitation such as vehicles, abandoned buildings, under bridges, etc.

Sheltered; in a shelter including shelters for domestic violence victims, living in a motel, sleeping on someone’s couch, also including overcrowded living conditions

No permanent residence of your own

The Jackson County Homeless Prevention Alliance is partnering with the Love Feast of First United Methodist Church to hold the PIT and provide a free meal, toiletry bag, as well as a place to access resources to assist with gaining housing, financial stability, mental health, spiritual guidance and much more.

The Jackson County Homeless Count (Point in Time Count) will be held Saturday, Sept. 12, 11 am, at First United Methodist Church. Volunteers are needed.
