The Labor Day Holiday Weekend is almost upon us. It is not this weekend, but the weekend that follows (Sept. 4 through Sept. 7). Traditionally this is the “last weekend of summer”. For many people, this is the last weekend they will camp in 2015. If you plan on being one of them, here are a few tips:

Camping is on a first come, first serve basis (no reservations), so bring your trailer out early. With the lake fuller than it has been for years, the Wednesday before the holiday (Sept. 2) if you are not too fussy on which site you get. If you have a specific site you want to try for, you should probably need to come out on Monday (Aug. 31). If you are tent camping, you do not need to come out quite so early. Arriving Wednesday or Thursday for a specific area is probably early enough.

Please plan on bringing firewood with you, or buying it at the Quartz Mountain Grocery Store. Gathering “dead and down” wood is strongly discouraged at Quartz Mountain. “Dead and down” wood is an important part of the biologic processes. Many insects live in or feed on the logs and branches lying on the ground. Those insects in turn provide food for many other animals, like Nuthatches or Woodpeckers. Therefore it is best to leave the dead and down wood where it lies.
