Nutrition and fitness meeting set

Committee seeks to improve quality of life

Special to the Altus Times

A local group of volunteers actively seeking to improve community health is planning to meet Monday and released an agenda for the public.

Jackson County Nutrition and Fitness Task Force is a subelement of the Jackson County Community Health Action Team or JCCHAT — an umbrella organization that oversees the work of six or more volunteer teams, each with its own unique approach to improve local quality of life.

As the name implies, the Task Force works to increase the quality of health for Jackson County residents by focusing on solutions to obesity, heart disease, diabetes and cancer, and improve physical activity and nutrition.

The group is slated to meet from noon to 1 p.m. Monday in the ground floor conference room at the Jackson County Memorial Hospital, 1200 E. Pecan St. in Altus.

The meeting is scheduled to begin with introductions, approval of past committee meeting minutes, followed by a series of topics that include a committee plan of action; and Tobacco Settlement Endowment Trust or TSET healthy living program updates that include the Southwest Oklahoma Community Action Group or SOCAG and the Jackson County Health Department or JCHD.

Upcoming events scheduled for discussion are the Jackson County Free Fair from Sept. 7-10 and the next regularly scheduled JCCHAT meeting Sept. 14.
