Salvation Army Family Store Appreciation Day slated

Special to the Altus Times

When Majors Ben and Rhon Walters arrived in Altus last year, their goal was to make a positive impact on the community.

One area of interest for them was to develop The Salvation Army Family Store to “become something we can all be proud of,” Ben Walters said.

The Salvation Army Family Store provides gently used sporting goods, furniture, household items, clothing, shoes, electronics, children’s items, etc. While these are offered at a low cost, the funds raised support the Altus Salvation Army programs and services right here in our community.

“And this Saturday, July 30, we will have a Customer Appreciation Day at our Family Store,” Walters said. “We will be serving hot dogs and cold water — we’ll be giving balloons to the children — and we will have a $5 bag sale. You can fill a brown bag (standard-size grocery bag) with clothes for only $5.”

“We’ve come a long way since last year,” Walters said. “We now have a much cleaner, and more organized place to donate and shop.”

This is important, because the programs and services benefit the local community, he said.

They operate a Soup Kitchen 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday and they can help with utilities, clothing, and food from their Food Pantry — all at their 1100 N. Park Lane location.

“We also offer youth services, including sending children to The Salvation Army’s Camp Heart ‘O Hills in Welling, as well as emergency disaster services,” Walters said.

In addition to donating goods to The Salvation Army Family Store, Walters encourages folks to shop. Soup Kitchen donations are helpful as well.

“We always have a need for paper products such as plates, cups, napkins, paper towels and plastic ware,” he said.

There is also a need for more volunteers in the Soup Kitchen and Family Store. For more information call 580-482-8577 or email [email protected]

The Salvation Army Family Store phone number is 580-482-4236 and is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday or 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. The store is closed Sundays.
