The Altus High School prom roared into gear Saturday night in the high school cafeteria.
The theme to this year’s prom was “The Great Gatsby” based on the 1925 F. Scott Fitzgerald novel of the same name, though the evening drew more flair from the 2013 Baz Luhrmann film adaptation.
This was the junior class’s year to sponsor the prom, and despite the fact that the theme may have been chosen just a few months ago, the hard work and dedication started years prior.
“We have been working since 8th grade raising money for this. It’s taken a lot,” said junior class parent Lynna Wilmes.
Lynna was also quick to point out the great attitude and work ethic of the junior class parents as well.
“We have an absolute fantastic group of parents,” she said. “They’ve worked together and there’s never been a cross word.”
The unique piece of this year’s prom rests in how creative the group of students and parents were.
“We’ve got really good craftsman that can make anything,” Wilmes explained. “And the kids got together and the kids worked to paint.”
The most impressive feat out of the entire project may be that the junior class and their parents redecorated the large room from bottom to top in only 48 hours. This includes hanging a brand new chandelier that was purchased by the junior class and is going to remain in place long after the prom has ended.
“The chandelier is a gift to the high school from the class of 2017,” said Wilmes.
