It was one of the biggest comebacks ever at Cletus B. Street Fieldhouse. The Altus Bulldogs trailed at one time by 18 points but rallied in the second half to defeat the Woodward Boomers here on Tuesday.

It couldn’t have been a worse start for Coach Rick Bull’s Bulldogs who scored only five points in the first quarter. They trailed at that point 22-5 and eventually faced that 18 point deficit.

Altus then rallied with 11 unanswered points and when Kasen Warren hit a fielder the Bulldogs whittled the Boomers lead to seven at 26-19.

Woodward carried a 33-24 lead into the halftime intermission.

Altus trailed by as many as 11 points in the third and that’s when the comeback began. It was comeback that included a four-point play by Nico Maldonado. The Bulldogs kept chipping away at their deficit and they saw their first lead when Warren hit a shot with 2:17 remaining to make it 47-46.

A pair of free throws by Imashay Shivers and Warren put Altus ahead 52-47.

The Boomers received three free throws by Garrett Owen and with eight seconds left, the Bulldogs led 54-52.

Shivers was fouled with two seconds and made the first free throw but missed the second. Woodward rebounded but time ran out leaving the Bulldogs with the victory.

“It was a big win, coming back like that,” Bull said. “It was good for the seniors and they all played well. Maybe this will give us a spark so we can play well in these last three games.”

Shivers led the Bulldogs with 16 points. Warren had 14 points and Maldonado 10 points.

Altus will now take to the road for their final three home games. They travel to Duncan on Friday and play at both Anadarko and Lawton MacArthur next week.

Going on the road for the final three games is something Bull welcomes.

“It’s good preparation for the playoffs, playing on the road,” Bull said.

The Altus High Lady Bulldogs fell to Woodward 46-36.

The second and third quarters were not kind to the Lady Bulldogs. They were outscored in the middle periods 24-10.

Itiya Knight scored 14 points and Tisay Woodhouse 10 points for Altus.
