A flurry during the middle portion of the fourth period sparked the Altus High Bulldogs to a 65-55 victory over the Elgin Owls here on Tuesday night.
It was a close game most of the way and Altus trailed 49-48 when Austin Parks sparked a run that gave the Bulldogs the lead. The 6-6 Senior scored the next seven points for Altus. A three-point bucket by Parks put the Bulldogs on top with 53-51 with with 3:50 remaining in the game. Altus never trailed after that.
In fact the Bulldogs outscored the visitors 12-4 down the stretch to preserve the victory.
Altus could have made it a lot easier on themselves it they would have shot better at the free throw line. The Bulldogs made only nine of 20 charity tosses.
Their man-man-man pressure defense did make a difference in the second half as the Owls managed only 22 points during that time.
Parks led all scorers with 18 points which included two three-point baskets. Devin Wilkerson was close behind with 17 points and four three-points buckets. Kalyn Knight added 13 points for the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs, 1-1 on the season, will take off a week before resuming play.
They will travel to Weatherford for an 8 p.m. meeting with the Eagles.
