Lawton man completes 51 mile walk to Altus City Park for MD

Vietnam veteran Alan Barth, 61, finished his 51 mile trek with sore legs and blistered feet, walking from Lawton to Altus to raise awareness for Muscular Dystrophy. He began his walk on Friday Aug. 30, at 9 a.m. and pressed on until completing the walk ahead of schedule, arriving at the Altus City Park at 6:20 on Saturday morning.

Barth, a Lawton resident, said that he had a great “send off” from the Lawton Christian Academy of 446 students in school uniforms holding banners to show their support. By wearing their uniforms a local company donated one dollar per student toward Muscular Dystrophy.

“I just kept thinking about those kids when I hurt,” Barth said.

During the walk, Barth was visited by several drivers and Highway Patrol who provided him water and sports drinks. “It was a good out pouring,” he said.

When people stopped along the highway, Barth told people what he was doing for MD, and asked them to participate during the Muscular Dystrophy Association telethon, “Show of Strength,” held on Labor Day to show support.

“We got it done for the cause,” he said.
