Location needed for Bountiful Baskets program

August 13, 2013

I would like to voice my concern about a loss our community is about to experience as well as offer a cry for help:

For quite sometime, Jackson County has been participating in an opportunity called Bountiful Baskets Food Co-op (BBFC). BBFC distributes produce baskets, organic produce baskets, artisan bread and sandwich bread every week. The Co-op offers a conventional produce basket every week which is generally ½ fruit and ½ veggies.

The monetary contribution is $15 and is generally worth $50 retail. Organic baskets require a contribution of $25. BBFC is a group of people who work together for mutual benefit. This is a grassroots, all volunteer, no contracts, no catch co-operative. Since there are no employees at Bountiful Baskets, we as a group pay rock bottom prices on your food.

The sites for the BBFC have changed several times since its arrival over the past few years. I would like to personally thank all those who have donated/offered without charge a place for this is occur. BUT we in Jackson County are about to lose our two sites due to the lack of an indoor building to use. According to the rules for BBFC, the site must have an indoor facility available in order to house the produce from weather conditions. The facility cannot be affiliated with a church/denomination and must have adequate parking and space for the semi truck to deliver the produce on Saturdays.

I am asking for those who have this type of facility to step forward. I would hate to see this go by the way side and it appears that Altus has numerous buildings not being used/occupied. It would be an investment in the health of the residents of Jackson county (currently over 180 baskets are made up every week) and a potential tax write off for the owner. Other sites are being looked as a possible alternative, but all of them are outside of the Altus area. For those who do participate in BBFC, I hope you will join with my voice in stating

“This is a valuable asset within Altus we do to want to lose.” Please help us keep it here. I welcome any help with this matter. My email address is
